What is the Pattern Day?

The word pattern comes from ‘patron’. The Pattern Day of Ardmore celebrates the local ‘patron’ saint, St. Declan. St. Declan’s Well and ecclesiastical settlement in Ardmore is considered the most ancient Christian settlement in Ireland. St. Declan was a bishop in Ireland before the arrival of St. Patrick. He is credited with a great many miracles from pushing back the sea to bringing hostages who died of the plague at Cashel, Co Tipperary back from the dead. Long after his death St. Declan was venerated and pilgrims traveled for miles to Ardmore in search of further miracles and cures.
Declan travelled to Rome and was ordained a bishop by Pope Hilary (461-468AD). While saying Mass one day on his return journey from Italy a bell was sent from heaven to Declan and later it was by following this bell that Declan came to found his great holy city at Ardmore.
There are monuments in Ardmore, remnants of the great city of Declan (such as St. Declan’s Oratory (known locally as An Beannachán), St. Declan’s Stone & St. Declan’s Well) and it was to these that pilgrims flocked from the time of Declan to the present day. Canon Patrick Power estimated that nearly 14,000 people came to Ardmore for the pattern day (24th July) in the early 1900s and is quoted as saying, "The Pattern of Ardmore was perhaps the most remarkable celebration of its kind in Ireland and certainly the most ancient and notable popular assembly in Decies."

The modern Pattern Festival was established in 2007 to revive the traditional Pattern Festival, but with a modern twist, focusing on a family-friendly festival built around the rich cultural heritage of Ardmore.
