Following a very difficult judging process, we are delighted to announce the winners of this year’s Ardmore Pattern Festival Photographic Competition.
The winning photograph, entitled 'Lunchtime at Ardmore Pageant' (right) was taken by Alice Daly from Dungarvan, Co Waterford. This fabulous photo was taken during the Festival Pageant on Saturday evening, which consisted of the re-enactment of the reputed arrival of St. Declan to Ardmore. The scene shows a depiction of what life was probably like in Ireland circa 460AD – a young boy is seen cooking fish, which was a central part of the staple diet of the time, over an open fire, with other scenes re-enacted in the background.
There were four runners up in the competition and their photos can be seen in the Photo Competition Album in our Photos section. The runners-up were:
(i) local Ardmore amateur photographer, Gerry O’Mahony for his wonderfully colourful depiction of a group of Brazilian-themed Fancy Dress entrants on the Friday night entitled “Feather Dusters!”
(ii) Noreen O’Brien from Cappagh, Co Waterford for her beautiful photo entitled “Punch & Judy Show”, which captures the innocent wonderment on the young faces enjoying the Punch and Judy Show during the Teddy Bear’s Picnic on the Saturday
(iii) Colette O'Connell from Dungarvan, Co Waterford, who had two fantastic runners-up photos – one called “Double Trouble”, taken during the Céilí Mór on Sunday night and the other called “Let’s Boogie” showing two young Pattern-goers having a dance under the watchful eye of Dora the Explorer!
(iv) John Shinnick, Manchester, England for his photo of two dancers getting into the swing of things during the Céilí Mór. It’s a wonderful portrayal of pure enjoyment and is titled “Not Just Happy Feet, then!”
It is said that “A good photograph stops a moment from running away” and these photos are a true testament to that.
Thanks a million to all of you who entered our photo competition. Thanks also to our two judges who gave of their time to go through all the entries in search of that winning photo. The wonderful selection of top quality photographs really made our judges work hard to pick the winners. We are delighted with the response we got and the photos gave us a fabulous pictorial record of the enjoyment that the Pattern Festival brings to Ardmore each year. Thank you all so much!
